Yes, experience is really the key. I've read a number of books and the book that I liked the best was "Titanium eBay:: A Tactical Guide to Becoming a Millionaire PowerSeller" by Skip McGrath. But there's nothing like just getting in there an trying some auctions. You will fail more often in the beginning than win, but you will eventally learn what works and what sells. I'm still a beginner at this, but I've got my inventory ready, so the next two months will tell.
Sourcing products is probably the hardest part (at least it has been for me). With that 5.25% final fee on eBay, you really have to watch profit margins with an eagle eye. And be on the lookout for *any* items to sell. I'd love to sell "consumer electronics", but my wife and I are getting ready to sell Gymboree clothes - something I would never have thought of selling when I started this.
So keep your eyes open and good luck!
