It's hard to make profit on ebay. Ebay takes most of the profit. The listing fee is too high. And we also have to pay for the final value fee, which is more than 5%. Besides, we also need to give 2.9% to Paypal. I thinik it's hard to get profit on ebay unless you sale some fake items!! That's what I think. Hope to hear other people's opinions.

Most of the Dollar auctions make their money from redirecting to other sites, getting email details for a mailing list and gaining feedback..

As Auction Man stated, the dollar auctions are not there to make any profit. But for a positive feedback added, paypal feed back, and recieving the buyers email address to send related bulk products or single products to this email addy,

The reason alot of us powersellers start auctions out at .99 is the listing fee is lower (you still get socked the final value fee). But it also attracts more buyers to your auctions. People don't want to see a high starting price, it takes the fun out of "auction" and it puts "high price" in their heads. Also, only use the listing designer if you have to use the second heading line. I almost always use the gallery. It has PROVED to bring more bidders as well. It catches the buyers interest before they even look at your auction.
Between eBay and Paypal fees however, there are times you lose out. That's why many prefer to receive money orders. (we accept paypal, money orders, bank transfers.....higher ticket items.....or cash on pickup).
