I would prefer to sell off my own website in order to help eliminate that 5.25% eBay fee. As I am still starting out, the website is not an option at this time. But I see eBay as a good way to help bring attention to website. If I take good care of my customers who buy from my eBay auctions, that will help draw traffic to thw website. So I see eBay as just another advertising tool. If I make, say 3% to 5% of an item, but I can get that customer to buy something else from my website at a much greater margin, then that 3%-5% would be worth it.
At least that's the theory. I'll report back in one year and let you know how it goes.

You can link to your website in your About Me page.
We have sold on Ebay as a side thing since Ebay first started, & it was so much different! It wasn't a flea market atmosphere. There was tons of money to be made & wasn't much competition. People were very appreciative.
Now Ebay is a huge flea market & it costs so much to post.
Its hard now to make money on Ebay.

I have to say this is wonderful info. I have been selling on ebay for a few years. I am a powerseller in fact. As eBay & Paypal fees are rising, profits are minimal. So, we have been considering our own website again (we had one in the past, but we don't handle those products anymore...we've changed from nascar to electronics and toys). Now I think I will be getting that site going. We also do wholesaling to outside customers, but that could increase our customer base dramatically.

powerseller
see on ebay ask any one what is the percentage of sold amount they pay back to ebay as selling fee,
Iam a power seller, over 13000 feedback,
I pay close to 40% of my sales,
literally iam not making any money,
plus i have 7 people to list, pay there salary, buying products to sell and inventory
iam literally not able to pay all my bills.
plus ebay keeps charging my credit card like carzy.
i STARTED THE GAME NOW i CANT END.
I have credit card debt of over $56000
and employee....
so I started my own site callednow iam starting to make money on this site.
what I do is
I put a bid banner a picture with my website name on ebay listing,
****pictures cant be linked to your site then ebay will suspend you*****
plus iam getting some sellers to sellers to sell on my site also i charge a small fee.
they are also making moeny....
its not like ebay, I want to have a win and win suituation between me and my sellers
on the whole e commerce is a loosing venture for me,
iam not able to keep cash in my account.
my sales is like $175000 per months
but I will have to pay $200000 to my bills
ebay fee, inventory, employee, internet connection bills and computer...
not able to maintain cash in my bank account
what fun there will be if there is no cash in bank
so I would suggest is ebay should only an alternative
if not its a big loosing game,
sellers wont know, if you sit down and put down your numbers on papers you will see what Iam talking about.
as a seller you will be working for ebay,
you will be busy packing shipping and sending invoice
in the end you will not be making money ....
only ebay will be becoming right....
watchg out and becareful,
make sure you make cash money
dont think yu have feedback on ebay its a asset....
all this dont count, any time ebay can suspend you and you can be in big trouble.
make sure your able to maintain a decent money in your bank.
if your not able to maintain a decent bank balance then your ebay venture a waste of time.
i used to have 3 shops, with full inventory
in 3 years it had gone down to 1 shop
and very low inventory and
bill outstaing of over $120000
at a point of time I was broke....
all this because of ebay, yahoo and google
be very careful on your online business
always have a brick and morter store also
just in case the online business is not getting enough cash... to keep you going
I have a very good experiance....on this ebay and online business....

Ebay is not a safe market for trading. There is nothing Fair about it. Dishonest sellers turn in their competitors to the vero cops in order to have their auctions shut down. The payment system, paypal is another scam - go to nopaypal.com.
Ebay is more like gambling. It is addicting and people keep trying to win big bucks playing the Ebay game. The only winner at Ebay is The House.

I find ebay quite ridiculous nowadays, Like mentioned by others the prices are really high cutting alot of your profit margin down instantly what makes it unfair is knowing how many people ebay copes for they need not take that high percentage to tell you the truth its greed, but where theres a need for something like paypal and ebay and no competition in the same league there will always be that greed n you just have to play the game.
I agree with fashion talker ebay has literally become like gambling because the risk of gaining profit is that high what with the competition and fee's n lack of ability to sell anything near retail because of the competition, and the chances of you recieving problems after your sale from someone are high nowadays (many ebayers who have no clue how ebay works they just wish to buy something quickly). Beyond ebays rules and regulations being extremely strict now beyond belief, its impossible when u have problems on ebay to talk to a human who can actually solve the problem you have (unless your a powerseller), you go onto ebay live chat and they just refer you to a department email who just then send you an automated reply.
You just know they dont care about you in the slightest n your viewed as a statistic when every reply you get is from a robot.
It all comes down to your plan, the opportunity you have infront of you n the product your working with, but generally for the majority of people i think ebay is very much so not going to make people money, especially with the tax man linking up with paypal and ebay to stop people even earning in the slightest before they've got any money to do anything with investment wise. A vicious cycle...
