Well,you are right.It is now very difficult to find the right partner.I have met the same problem.I am a shoe wholesaler,and in cooperationship with several customers in the USA for years.
It is now difficult for buyers to find a trust worthy,real wholesaler.At the mean time,it is difficult for us to find serious buyers too.I think it is not only in shoe field,but all the products ranges.
As a wholesaler,i would like to introduce new customers to old customers at the beginning.I think this is the best way to do business and gain new customers to help business grow up.
It sometimes can take a while to develop a good business relationship with someone that you can trust. It took me almost 2 years to find a reliable dropshipper that carries the products I was looking for.
I think it's sad how people never share their info with other people. I will share some of my wholesalers to the people that ask because there is enough money to go around for all.
You'll find its all do to with competition

Everybody worries to order a desire product from the middleman. But, you might think if the middleman can offer you a better price and you still can make the profit. I think you still can order from the middleman.
Scenario:
By contrast; a middleman orders 100 pcs each month from a wholesaler, and an individual buyer orders 10-20 pcs each month from same wholesaler. Do you think this middleman can get more and more discount than this individual from wholesaler.
Wholesalers may not search buyers, but middlemans may post their selling products everywhere. Price good, service good, why not just try the middleman

Yes. I as a manufacturer foreign salesman was no way to look for people who really need the goods but many people who really need goods can't find out the really supplier
it's hard to tell. however, as long as i find the price is fair and reasionable, i will start to order.
