For safe payments to wholesalers in China use DHgate.com. This online market website has a secure escrow service for payment processing that protects the buyers payment. DHgate escrow doesn't send the payment to the seller until the buyer examines the merchandise and says OK to pay.

You have to follow the rules for the escrow system to work. For example, do not approve the payment until after you have examined the product and you are satisfied.

But I agree that having a relationship with the seller is also advantageous. But how do you find them in the first place? I have used DHgate's seller trust score to identify reliable sellers, so far with good success.
