Default New Product Distribution - New Company Seeking Help!

    Hello,
I would love some brutally honest feedback from experienced business people. Long story short is that I make candles and just got my products (only 2 at this time) online after a long year of product development. I've been in the service industry most of my life and I find my "product-side" of business to be lacking in experience. I have 400+ in stock with these items and I’m not afraid of a hard contract. Hence the hobby to business approach. I could product up to 50 box sets a day if demand required it.

I'm getting the internet side down with my site, amazon, etsy and ebay soon to come but have 0 sales from people I don't know. I'm not complaining, just a little shocked. I think if this business to ever grow, the sales might start at the retail stores more than the complex, over populated interent arena. Here is my site (if you interested in seeing the product, but this is not my reason for the post)

I can't post a link because i'm new I guess but it's orangecoastcandles with a www in front and a .com at the end... sigh

What I’m wondering is something else I could do on the retail "brick" side of products. I'm almost done with a brochure that I'm going to hand out to retail stores directly with a sample. I found some great threads on wholesale/markup idea's and trends and it was pure gold to find. But I'm betting this will still not generate the sales required to keep me away from going back to a full-time job.

    THE QUESTION:
Ok, so here is my question. Distribution, how, where, who, why? I don't know anything about this so explain it as you talking to your child. Can I work with a company that can distribute my product for me somehow? Requirements and cost? Completely different approach like network marketing, hire a person to distribute? Funds are running out and I’m already invested too much in this endeavor to go much further.

Funny side note: I came from a candle site that was featured on candle review website I just joined and these guys had a banner add on Business Wholesale (the first site I looked at to post this question) I considered it a sign and registered on this site to post my question rather than digging further.
Sorry for the long post, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Default my best advice

I am just checking out forum here for first time and I read your post first and looked at a few others and see this place has a lot of spammers so it isn't a good website, especially not for "a sign" from, assuming God here, lol. In business, everything is research, research, and calculated risk taking. You must do much work to be profitable, if you ask for others to go out and sell your products, expect very little in profit margin. Most people don't give a **** if you go broke, you better get out there with a business permit and set up a kiosk in a mall, flea market, somewhere. The money wont come to you so go after it.
I am scared for you since you already jumped head first into the waters without feeling the temperature first. Big no no. Research again comes into play, at every choice and step of your business. Look at all competition and see what works for them and why, find business' that can offer better services to you for less cost, etc. There is a wealth of free business courses on the Internet but be wary of all the sites that are full of hyped b.s. selling a dream, there is no easy money unless you are elected politician. Candles is a saturated market everywhere, net or Walmart like store, they have plenty and I wouldn't have tried that route. Were you just looking to become a manufacturer? And figured it wouldn't be too hard to make candles?
I am thinking you should try to find a way to learn sales, product marketing, and research target audiences. Then get items that you feel have strong demand and not much competition in and buy wholesale and sell at your price as you determined best from your research for maximum profitability.
Hope you don't give up on dream to not work for some other businesses for rest of life. But don't think nothing about quitting a failing business idea, just find a business idea that is worthwhile and always work on improving it. One small, careful step at a time. Use good judgment and always look for the answer on your own as asking others is waste of time, no one has your best interest in there heart, I am only trying to "talk to you as my child" (lmao) But seriously, I am understanding of your predicament as I grew tired of working hard for others gains while being replaceable at any time. Always working and learning more and more about the business and you can have rewarding income. Oh yeah, expenses must be kept in check and as minimal as possible, so if you have to buy alot of something, try to broker a bargain for buying in larger quantities, etc.
    Good luck brother

Thanks for the reply Dopestpossible, yeah this forum seems to be pretty slow. I agree with what you said and I was extremely slow to release product(s). I chose a material not used very often with good results and it took forever to get it right. This is the thing that sets me apart from the saturated candle market as you said. i've done a couple swap meets and had terrible results, they are looking for cheep candles in the venues I went to. (could just be the events).

Since this post, I have found some wholesale sites that you can post larger quantity listing where retailers can order from you. The price of these sites vary but $300 - $700 + a small commision fee. Maybe you are right, I have to grow it myself because no one cares and if they do they will be taking my first born to do it.

I'm continueing to develope my product line now and it's much faster after my major issues have been resolved with my first product(s). I believe I don't have a varitiy enough to open boths yet. With only 2 items I figured I would saturate the internet market everywhere and retail stores then branch out after I get my first 2 products established around. Still don't know if this is a good idea, but i'm going to stick with it. I should have my borchure done this week back from the printers so I will see how that goes.

I was kind of hoping to get a response from someone who works for a larger wholesale distributor company with some insight, but I really do apprieciate your kind words. And yes, I will never give up the fight of making someone else rich from my hard work ;)
